The next intake is scheduled for 11th of February 2017. Read on for more info.

If you’re a complete beginner interested in joining a bouting league, a wannabe referee or just looking to get a bit fitter and learn how to do something you’ve never done before, then our Fresh Meat programme is the place for you! The programme is open to anyone aged 18 or over.

WHAT DOES IT INVOLVE?

We will teach you all you need to know about roller derby over a 20 week programme. This will cover:

  • WFTDA minimum skills – stops, falls, derby form, blocking and more
  • Drills to improve footwork, pack awareness, speed and strength, blocking and jamming
  • Rules and tactics
  • Skills you will need to be able to scimmage with the Recreational League (should you wish to advance to that stage)

WHAT DO I NEED?

All skaters should bring the following protective gear:

  • Quad roller skates
  • Helmet
  • Kneepads (preferably ‘vert’ or aggressive pads – you will be falling a lot)
  • Elbow pads
  • Wrist guards
  • Mouthguard

Unfortunately, we don’t have storage capacity to provide any of these equipment, so you’ll need to source these prior to starting the programme.

If you’re not sure what equipment to buy, or have any questions about equipment, head over to the LRG Future Rollergirls Discussion Forum and ask as many questions as you like.

Once you’ve decided on your kit, we recommend purchasing from Double Threat Skates. Double Threat Skates is London’s only roller derby specific skate store. It is run by Goregasm and Kitty DeCapitate from the LRG main league. Together they have over 10 years of derby experience so really know their stuff! They are also super helpful and friendly.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

The cost is £25 for a set of 5 weeks, payable in instalments.

HOW DO I JOIN?

Sign up for the Recreational League Waiting List using the form below to be notified of the next intake session via email and to receive more info. We have two intakes per year (maximum). The next intake is scheduled for 11th February 2017.

Join the Waiting List

We get inundated with requests to join Fresh Meat so if an intake is over capacity, we run our intake session in the form of a tryout. This is a 2-hour session and is designed so we can see as many skaters as possible to determine who would be the best fit for the programme. We would let you know if that was the case. In that sort of scenario, unfortunately, we can’t take everyone onto the programme but we will always keep your details on the waiting list for the next intake, so keep trying!

THAT SEEMS LIKE A LONG TIME TO WAIT. I WANT TO GET INVOLVED NOW!

We like enthusiasm! There are many skaters out there just like you who are organizing informal skate sessions at a variety of indoor and outdoor locations. Visit the London Rollergirls forum to meet future rollergirls and referees like yourself and find out where it’s all happening, or start a session yourself!

Alternatively, you should try out the Open Skates sessions held at the City of London Academy in Bermondsey most Fridays. For more information on that, check out the Facebook group here.

Skaters in our Fresh Meat programme are also invited to join in on our regular sessions with the Dynamic Sports Academy, an off skates programme designed to make you bigger, faster, stronger and smarter. Whilst this is not compulsory, the sessions are really valuable to London Rollergirls so if you’re looking to improve your fitness in a challenging and fun atmosphere, we would definitely recommend that you attend. DSA also provides a long distance programme if you’re unable to attend the sessions. Ask one of the girls about this when you join!

Want to become part of the LRG army but unsure about joining the programme? Or perhaps you want to see more before you can commit? There are a number of other ways you can be involved in the league if you’re keen, from becoming an official, to joining our stats crew, to letting us know if you’ve seen a suitable venue. Click here for more information on getting involved!

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE PROGRAMME?

At the end of our programme, following final assessments, Fresh Meat-ers may be invited to join our Rec League (subject to a successful probation period). For more information about our Rec League, including training sessions, attendance requirements and more, click here.

I CAN SKATE ALREADY. DO I NEED TO JOIN FRESH MEAT?

If you have already passed your minimum skills with another league, you don’t necessarily have to go through Fresh Meat again! Email us at recleague@londonrollergirls.com letting us know what your skating experience is and we can go from there!

ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO KNOW?

Wear comfortable clothes for exercise (not jeans) and have fun!

For more information, email us at recleague@londonrollergirls.com and add ‘Fresh Meat’ in the subject line.
