The London Rollergirls Recreational League is open to either beginner skaters who have passed their minimum skills all the way up to seasoned skaters who want a no-pressure, non-competitive, informal environment to enjoy our crazy sport of roller derby. Our recreational league is open to skaters 18 and over.

What does it involve?

Our Rec League trains twice a week (Wednesdays and Saturdays) doing both drills and scrimmages:

  • The sessions are led by seasoned skaters from the LRG main league and will keep you fit, improve your rules and tactics knowledge and prepare you for life on the track.
  • Rec league has regular intraleague bouts, as well as mixed scrimmages and closed door bouts against other leagues and LRG’s main league C team, Batter C Power.
  • The Rec league has a committee structure responsible for organising different aspects of league activity, with oversight from LRG main league. Everyone plays their part in the running of the league.

Though our Rec League does not skate competitively, there is a lot of competition to be in the Rec League. That’s why we ask that skaters meet our minimum attendance criteria of 50% to take part in Rec League bouts!

What do I need?

To skate in our Rec League, you’ll need to have passed your WFTDA minimum skills and be competent in stops, falls, derby form, blocking and more. In addition, all skaters should have the following protective gear:

  • Quad roller skates
  • Helmet
  • Kneepads (preferably ‘vert’ or aggressive pads – you will be falling a lot)
  • Elbow pads
  • Wrist guards
  • Mouthguard

If you’re looking to upgrade your equipment and are not sure what to buy, or have any questions about equipment, head over to the LRG Future Rollergirls Discussion Forum and ask as many questions as you like.

Alternatively, check with our skate gurus, Double Threat Skates. Double Threat Skates is London’s only roller derby specific skate store. It is run by Goregasm and Kitty DeCapitate from the LRG main league. Together they have over 10 years of derby experience so really know their stuff! They are also super helpful and friendly.

How much does it cost?

The cost is £5 per session or £25 per month.

How do I join?

Our Fresh Meat programme links in with the Rec League. After Fresh Meat-ers successfully complete the programme, they may be invited to join our Rec League (subject to a successful probation period). For more information about the Fresh Meat programme, click here.

We welcome skate transfers for any skaters who have already passed their minimum skills and are looking to join the Rec League from another league. For more information, email us at letting us know what your skating experience is and we can go from there!

That seems like a long time to wait. I want to get involved now!

We like enthusiasm! There are many skaters out there just like you who are organizing informal skate sessions at a variety of indoor and outdoor locations. Visit the London Rollergirls forum to meet future rollergirls and referees like yourself and find out where it’s all happening, or start a session yourself!

Alternatively, you should try out the Open Skates sessions held at the City of London Academy in Bermondsey most Fridays. For more information on that, check out the Facebook group here.

Skaters in our Rec league are also invited to join in on our regular sessions with the Dynamic Sports Academy, an off skates programme designed to make you bigger, faster, stronger and smarter. Whilst this is not compulsory, the sessions are really valuable to London Rollergirls so if you’re looking to improve your fitness in a challenging and fun atmosphere, we would definitely recommend that you attend. DSA also provides a long distance programme if you’re unable to attend the sessions. Ask one of the girls about this when you join!

Want to become part of the LRG army but unsure about joining the programme? Or perhaps you want to see more before you can commit? There are a number of other ways you can be involved in the league if you’re keen, from becoming an official, to joining our stats crew, to letting us know if you’ve seen a suitable venue. Click here for more information on getting involved!

Yes, we welcome guest skaters at our recreational league. If you’re interested in this, email us at letting us know when you would like to attend and we can go from there.

The Rec league are regularly invited to try out for LRG main league. LRG main league is the competitive part of the London Rollergirls and is comprised of three teams: London Brawling, Brawl Saints and Batter C. We regularly post updates to the Rec league about these via the forum as well as our Facebook page, so keep an eye open for updates there!
